Shannon's Story

A Young Mother's Journey

______________________________________________________________________________________

Long ago, before God made the world, He had to design the people that would live in that world.
So there had to come a time when He said to Himself, "I want to make a world full of happy people
where I can live with them and we can have wonderful times together for all eternity!"

With that thought in mind, He thought, with his fingers to his chin, "I think I'd like to make a
special little girl.  She will have blond, curly hair.  She will have a smile as bright as the sun.

She will have a sweetness about her that will make many people smile

and to get them to think about Me.

She will be born on June 2, 1976.

I can't wait until she is born so that I can fulfill My plans for her life!

I'm so excited!"

God also chose to make another little girl.  He had big plans for her, too.  She was shy and naive
and liked to daydream about falling in love.  God knew that she would make a lot of mistakes in
her life, but He chose to make her the mother of his blonde, curly-headed servant.  God said, "I'm
going to give her a precious gift - to be the mother of my blonde, curly-headed servant.

Even though God's plans were so wonderful, He knew that there would be a time when one of his
angels that He had created would turn against Him.  He knew that Lucifer, His brightest, most
magnificent created being and one-time closest friend would cause great heartache for the world.
God would have to wait to fulfill all his His plans for the happiest times.

God knew ahead of time everything that would happen to Shannon.  He knew from before He made the
world that Shannon would have a terrible accident that would eventually take her life.

In the meantime, He planned and created lots of other wonderful people to be around Shannon, me, and my
family - to love us in this time of great loss.  God saw a storm coming and he sent Pastor Tom and
Debbie to us (and the rest of our church).  God sent me to work at First Presbyterian Church.

He knew it was filled with Christ-like people who would love and care for me.

God put Shannon to sleep last night at 7:50 p.m.

Before she died, we stood in a half-circle at the foot of her bed while the hospital chaplain
(Dale) had prayer with us.  When the time came very near, I played Sandi Patty's song, "In The
Name Of The Lord" on Shannon's CD player.  It was an awesome moment.  Earlier, I had set up the
computer speakers hooked up to her CD player on each side of Shannon's head

so that she could have  music surrounding her.

I arrived at the hospital at about 2:15 p.m.  I drove over alone.  I felt I didn't want to have
anyone feeling restless, or nervous, or tired, or having to go out to the waiting room.  So, I
went by myself.  At the same time, I thought, "I can handle being alone at the moment if she would
die, but then who will I have to turn to afterwards, how will I be able do DRIVE home alone?"

As usual, God had it all planned out ahead of time!  As I was walking down the hospital corridor
towards the lobby, Dale, the hospital chaplain, walked out of the hospital chapel and said, "Hi,
Wendy!"  I told him that Shannon was slowly being taken off her life-support and that she may not
live very long.  He asked if we could sit and talk.

He said that he had hoped he could be there if this day would come.

Dale said that he had some paperwork to do and then he would be along to stay with me in Shannon's
room.  During the afternoon, he brought us a root-beer and me a piece of carrot cake.  It was just
a peaceful time of chatting, even though we kept watch on the monitor of Shannon's heart rate as
it, slowly crept lower, and lower.  When I got there, her heart rate was at 112.

It's a funny thing, the whole time that Dale was with us - five hours - his pager didn't go off
even once!  Is God in control?  Yes.....

After a couple of hours, Dale said to me, "Why don't you call your family, this seems like it's
probably Shannon's special day."  Everyone arrived at about 6:15 - 6:30 p.m.  Poor Pastor Tom was
in Sugarcreek, Ohio at a pastor's convention.  I kept calling and interrupting him to give him
updates.  He said it was okay, "I want to be interrupted."  My mom, Bonnie (my sister), Vickie
(family friend), Suzie and Mike (Shannon's sister, and brother-in-law),

and my husband Mike all came.

I felt so bad for Bonnie.  She's always had a tough exterior but a warm heart.  It was hard for me
to see her so upset.  She couldn't bring herself to go into Shannon's room.  I told her it was
alright; she didn't have to go in.  Suzie and Mike had to bring their kids, Austin (6) and Jordan
(almost 2), and had to take turns in the waiting room.  As it was after visiting hours, the nurse
said that we all could stay, but that we all had to be in the room and not the hall

(it's not a narrow hall, but a pretty open area).

So, it took from 2:15 to 7:50 p.m. for the monitor to go from 112 down to zero - five hours and
thirty-five minutes.  Shannon truly was dependent upon the blood pressure medicine to keep her
alive.  But at the same time, the blood pressure medicine would

eventually mummify all her body parts.

Initially, late on Friday night, we made the decision as a family to not let Shannon suffer
anymore.  It was decided to not have them spike up the BP meds if her heart rate would go down.  I
called and spoke with Cassie at the nurses' station at about midnight, Saturday.

Suzie commented to me that when she came to see Shannon on Saturday night, she opened her eyes
real wide and tried to say something to Suzie.  That made Suzie feel very happy - they were
finally at peace with one another.  But I did say before that they had served each other during
our church's foot-washing/Communion service the day before the accident.  I heard Suzie talking
with Dale about how she felt responsible for Shannon getting hurt because it was h

I heard him reassure her about it - that it wasn't his fault.

Sunday, mid-morning, Carlita (day nurse) called to tell me that Shannon's BP had dipped and she
had given her some fluid to bring it back up.  Then, just a short time later, she called again and
told that Dr. Suh was there and if I would like to speak to him.  Dr. Suh is the head of CCU.  He
was the one who had the inspiration to do the CT scan and found the blood clot in Shannon's leg.
He told me in essence they had done all they could do for Shannon and that he felt her body was
just wearing out - that it was tired.  She had fought so hard.

Dr. Suh mentioned about having the cardiologist disable her pacemaker.  I gasped when he said it,
but then I said "Okay."  He also said that they would take her off (also) the antibiotics along
with weaning her off the BP med.  Since the info came from him, I decided to agree to let "nature
take it's course."  I was always afraid that I was "jumping the gun" ahead of God, but all the
signs seemed to point in the direction I was taking - since it really was a "Catch 22" situation.

I asked the nurses if they would take down all the cards in her room for me, as it would be too
much (reminiscent of the scene in "Fried Green Tomatoes" where the nurse is ripping off the paper
roses on the wall of Mrs. Threadgood's room).  Couldn't take that.

Mike and I stayed while the rest of the family went to my mom's house.  Pastor Tom said he would
get there about 11:30 p.m.  I had to sign the hospital papers as next of kin - I've been putting
a frown face after my signature whenever it was something sad.  Dale said that since Shannon had
been admitted via the Emergency Room, it was mandatory

by the Franklin County Coroner to do an autopsy.

When everyone arrived at mom's last night, we had to discuss how to tell Zachory and Kaitlyn the
sad, sad news.  Mike and I, and Pastor Tom walked over to their condo (living with their dad,
Frank) only one block away (!).  Of course, the kids were in bed asleep.  Pastor Tom came up with
the idea that Zach would stay home from school, and that their step-mother (Carrie) would take
them over to my mom's house whenever they woke up.  I'm going to go over and tell them as gently
has I can (I know God will help me).  Then, we won't do anything for about an hour - we'll just
kinda sit around.  Then they will spend the night and most of Tuesday with us - then - go back to
their dad's.  Pastor Tom had envisioned us telling them last night, and then they would have had
to go back to bed and not be able to sleep.

Frank asked me if I would give him picture of Shannon with the kids to hang in their room.  He
became teary-eyed when we told him the news.  I've seen him be compassionate at times over the
years.  Please pray that God can get to his heart and to overcome all his anger from childhood.

As Shannon may be buried in Mt. Vernon, we've decided that the funeral will be at Brucker and
Kishler on North 21st Street.  No date set, yet.  I'll have to wait for them to contact me.

As Pastor Tom and Debbie will be in California until Dec. 20, we have tentatively set a date for a
Memorial Service on Jan. 8, 2005.  There will be music and wonderful memories shared.

Pastor Tom said to me, "I've never said this to anyone before in my thirty years of ministry.  I
think I would probably not be able to get through doing Shannon's funeral service."  His heart is
broken.  It's really had a profound effect on him.

I had told the nurses about all the e-mails I had received, and they are very interested in seeing
them sometime.  Rae Ann and Dale both want to come to the funeral and/or memorial service, and
maybe some more of her nurses - they really loved Shannon, too.

Thank you ALL for your love, your prayers, your concern for my little girl.  She grew up without a
father, she never learned to drive, she had a lot of tumult and heartbreak, but she gave her heart
to God again one day before the accident.  I believe that God comforted her in her distress -
everyone is amazed that she last for SO LONG with everything that was happening to her!  Yesterday
I read, "But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering;

he speaks to them in their affliction."  Job. 36:13.

I hope that God spoke to Shannon and gave her visions of the angels attending her.  She told us
that she thought of Jesus and the angels, "That's why I'm not scared."  If we are faithful, we
WILL see and be with her when Jesus comes.  She will then have her NEW and glorious body - and
most of all, the gift of eternal life.

Go to sleep, my love.

 Woman Critically Injured at Parade

Schnell attempted to jump onto float, slipped and fell

A Newark woman is in critical condition in a Columbus hospital nine days after suffering an injury during the United Way Parade.

Shannon Schnell, 28, was walking alongside a float on West Church Street while marching in the parade on Sept. 19.  She attempted to jump onto the float, but she slipped, fell underneath it and was reportedly dragged a few feet, Newark police records stated.  Schnell was originally take to Licking Memorial Hospital, but later transferred to Grant Medical Center where she was in critical condition today.

A hospital spokesman could not provide information on when Schnell was admitted there or the extent of her injuries.

While most of the safety concerns at the parade center around kids running into the street for candy, this incident has alarmed the United Way.

"We ask everyone to be aware of their surroundings," said Donna Carpenter, executive director of the Licking County United Way.  "There's a lot of activity and it's easy to become distracted."

Carpenter said the United Way requires parade participants to sign a release form to march in the parade that absolved the organization of responsibility for injuries.

She added that the entire organization is pulling for Schnell.

"We are certainly sorry to hear she has turned worse," Carpenter said.  "Our hearts just go out to her and her family."

"Hi, this is for Michael and Wendy.  I just wondered how Shannon was doing today.

I told Mr. Karlson about it and he had everybody pray for her.  So, you know, and asked

people to pray for her on an ongoing basis...give me a call and let me know how she's doing,

and, I'm anxious to hear from you."

"This is Eloise, and I just called to see how everybody was and 'cause I didn't know anything

about it 'til Sunday.  So, well, anyway, I just wanted you to know I was thinking about you.

Bye, bye.

Spiritual Support Sustains Woman

United Way parade victim still critical

Reporter - Erik Johns

"The family and friends of the woman injured during the Sept. 19 United Way parade credit divine intervention for keeping her alive.

...Schnell was originally taken to Licking Memorial Hospital but was transferred a few hours later to Grant Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, unconscious and on a respirator.

She suffered a broken collarbone, broken shoulder blade, broken ribs, and a punctured lung.  She also developed an infection as the result of her injuries, according to family members.

Wendy Riebel, Schnell's mother said the family was warned that she might not survive.

Early Monday morning (Sept. 27), the Rev. [Pastor] Tom Hughes, MA of the Newark Seventh-day Adventist Church went into Schnell's ward at the hospital and began reciting verses of the Bible.

"The doctors had been giving some pretty grim news," Hughes said.  "It just made me angry to think the devil could do that."

For about a half an hour, Hughes read from Psalms and the book of Luke.

"Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you," reads Luke 10:19, a passage Hughes found particularly powerful.

After leaving the room, one of the nurses approached Hughes.

"He said, 'I don't know what you were doing in there, but whatever it is, go back in and do it some more,'" Hughes said.

Apparently, after Hughes' reading, Schnell's blood pressure rose to a safer rate, and other vital signs improved, too.

Riebel considers Hughes' actions the turning point in Schnell's recovery.

"Before he went in there, the doctors said she wouldn't make it through the night," she said.

"She's been stable ever since."

Schnell still has a long way to go.  She remains unconscious, and her condition could still deteriorate.

"It's just touch-and-go," Riebel said.  "She's not out of the woods yet."

Riebel said the continual support and prayer from her church and other churches in the area are vital to Schnell's recovery.

"We've got at least five churches praying for her," she said.  "This outpouring of support is phenomenal.

I can't get over it."

"Hi, Wendy, this is Erik Johns, reporter, at the Advocate.  We talked last week.

I was hoping to talk to you today 'cause I want to try and get an update on Shannon's

condition for the paper here.  Look, if you could give me a call as soon as you get this message;

it's about 3:15 (p.m.) on Monday right now.  I can be reached at... or you can get me on my cell phone...Thanks."

Woman injured in parade wakes up

28-year-old could lose feet, 3 fingers

Reporter - Erik Johns

A local woman injured in the Licking County United Way Parade last month awoke from three weeks of unconsciousness in a Columbus hospital only to face the possibility of losing her feet and three fingers.

Shannon Schnell, 28, of Newark, has been communicating with family and medical staff since Friday night -- even mouthing out sentences, said her mother, Wendy Riebel.

"If she didn't have that (tracheal tube), she'd be talking to us," Riebel said.  "She's been getting better and better every day I've seen her."

...The (staph) infection led to an array of complications, leading doctors to question whether she would survive, Riebel said.  Circulation problems have made the amputation of Schnell's feet below the knees and of three fingers (left hand) a distinct possibility.

"We're going to keep believing God is going to heal her feet," Riebel sad.  "I hope that her legs turn pink on the operating table."

Riebel said the amputations could come as early as the end of this week.

Riebel credits continuous prayer from family and friends for helping Schnell return to consciousness.  Spirituality has played in important role for Schnell's family over the past three weeks.

Pastor Tom Hughes of the Newark Seventh-day Adventist Church has been a constant presence at the hospital and was to speak to Schnell Monday evening about all she's been through -- including the possibility of amputations.

He said Schnell's fate is out of his hands, and he must rely on God to aid her recovery.

"God's the biggest, baddest dude in the jungle.  Whatever He says goes," Hughes said.  "But I'm not ready to concede anything, not one eyelash."

He added that even though she may lose her feet, Schnell is still alive and will hopefully be able to return to her life with her 4- and 6-year-old children.

"I think it's an unbelievable miracle that she's alive," Hughes said.  "I'm so thankful her children are going to have their mother."

"Hi, this is Carly at the hospital.  Just leaving an end-of-shift message for Wendy that

Shannon is doing okay.  And you're probably on your way into the hospital, so I will talk

to you later.  Bye, bye."

Benefit aids hurt mother

Event helps woman injured in parade

Reporter -- L. B. Whyde

Two months after falling off a United Way parade float, Shannon Schnell is still not out of the woods.

On Saturday [Nov. 20], the 28-year-old mother's heart stopped three times.

By Sunday, she was doing better as family and friends gathered at the Heath Eagles to raise more than $1000.

Sharry Baker and her sister, Debbie Howard, who is Schnell's co-worker at Anomatic Corp. of Newark, organized the event.  In addition to yesterday's fund-raiser, Baker held raffles at the Eagles the past five weekends raising more than $500.

"A lot of local businesses donated to the raffle," Baker said.  "Considering the number of people we had in here tonight, I am actually shocked at the amount we did raise.  I still expect to make another couple hundred dollars."

The money will be given to Schnell's family to help with Christmas for the children.

...Circulation problems made the amputation of Schnell's feet below the knees and three of her fingers necessary.

Sunday's fund-raiser helped to put some cheer into the life of Schnell's mother, Wendy Riebel of Newark.  She was overwhelmed with emotion in trying to verbalize her gratitude to the fund-raiser organizers.

"This is really, really neat," Riebel said.  "I don't have enough words to express my feelings for them.  Shannon didn't know people cared about her at work."

Riebel has learned to take life day by day, even hour by hour.  She calls the hospital at 6 a.., noon and midnight in addition to getting off work early so she can go to Grant Medical Center.

"Some days I feel real good about it and other days I don't," Riebel said.  "She almost died but she is still with us.  She looks so pretty laying in the bed, I think there is no way she can die."

Through the publicity of two Web sites, www.prophecywatch.biz and www.lifetalk.net, Schnell's story has reached people around the world.  Riebel has received more that 300 e-mails from people living as far away as Russia, with each telling her that they are praying for Schnell.

(Shannon) Schnell is a divorced mother of two children, Zachory, 6, and Kaitlyn, 4.  Zachory witnessed the accident and has become very withdrawn and solemn, said his grandmother Venus Shaner of Newark.

"It has been a very trying time for all of us," Shaner said.  "We are praying that she pulls through this and comes home.  She is fighting with all she's got."

Sue Dunlap is a co-worker of Schnell's at Anomatic.  She helped organize a fund-raiser at the factory with a potluck and raffle.  The workers raised more than $800, and the company matched it.

"People were real good about bringing things in," Dunlap said.  "It's just so tragic.  Her life changed drastically in a matter of minutes.  If she pulls through this, her life is never going to be the same."

"I feel so bad for her," Shaner added.  "It tears my heart out every time I think about her babies.  Why is this poor girl having to go through all of this?  She is so young and has so much to live for.  I feel for the kids."

"I'm leaving a message for Wendy, and I wonder if she would give me a call.

I'm assuming she is the mother of Shannon Schnell and I wonder if she would return my call.

It's ... That's my office and my name is 'Reese.'  R - double 'E' - S - E.  And if she would call anytime, it's now about 12 o'clock Tuesday noon, and if she would call me -

whatever is convenient for her - I would appreciate it.  Thank you."

"Hi, Wendy, this is Ronda.  I just heard about Shannon this week and I wanted to talk

to you.  I just felt terrible.  Anyway, you can call me at home if you have the time.

I know how busy you are.  But, anyway, perhaps I'll talk to you later.  Bye."

Shannon's view from her room - Grant Hospital.  Shannon was a big fan of 2003 American Idol finalist Clay Aiken.  Shannon, along with her two children, Zachory and Kaitlyn, and her sister, Suzie, had attended Clay's concert at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio, in August 2004 -- just one month before her accident.  Shannon had made the comment about the event, "I screamed the loudest."

We made many attempts to contact Clay to see if he might visit Shannon to encourage her while she was in the hospital but were unsuccessful.  Many times we were able to ease Shannon's hospital depression after showing her Clay's picture or even mentioning his name.  She would get a big smile on her face.

Mother hurt in United Way parade dies

Reporter -- Jason Main

Nearly three months after an accident during the Licking County United Way Parade sent her to the hospital, Shannon Schnell died from complications to her injuries Sunday night (Dec. 5).

Schnell, 28, of Newark, died about 7:50 p.m. Sunday surrounded by her family at Grant Medical Center, Columbus, said her mother, Wendy Riebel.  Just before she did, Schnell's family gathered around the foot of her bed to pray with the hospital's chaplain [Dale Bennett], Riebel said.

Schnell, who was walking alongside the Newark Seventh-day Adventist Church's float in the Sept. 19 parade in Newark, tried to get on the float while it was moving but slipped, was dragged by it and run over.  She sustained a broken collarbone, shoulder blade and ribs and a punctured lung.  Later, Schnell developed a staph infection that evolved into a condition similar to toxic shock," Riebel said.

The parade, the traditional start to the United Way's annual fund-raising drive has never had a participant injured so severely before, said Donna Carpenter, United Way of Licking County's executive director.

"I'm just so saddened by the whole thing," Carpenter said.  "Our condolences to the family."

Just a few weeks ago, doctors were optimistic about Schnell's chances for recovery, but her heart rate started dropping, she began bleeding internally and she developed a clot in her stomach, Riebel said.

Doctors had told Riebel that her daughter would not recover, and late Sunday morning, Riebel advised the hospital to deactivate Schnell's pacemaker and begin cutting back the blood-pressure medication that was both keeping her alive and causing her body to deteriorate.  After that, Schnell's blood pressure slowly began dropping until her heart stopped.

"We were stuck in the middle with what to do," Riebel said.  "It was peaceful.  If I ended up like that, I would want someone to do that way for me.  It was just like she went to sleep."

Riebel said she last communicated with her daughter on Saturday, telling her she loved her and missed her, and Schnell responded in kind, mouthing to her response around a tube inserted in her nose and down her throat [also had a trach tube].

The pair had not seen much of each other until shortly before the accident, when they began walking together after work.  Riebel said she will always remember the shopping trip they took to Easton Town Center two weeks before the parade as an enjoyable afternoon spent with her daughter.

"That was really special," she said.  "I kind of felt that we were going to do more things together."

Schnell also had begun attending church more often, which pleased her mother.

"I was just glad that she gave her heart to God," Riebel said.

Schnell leaves behind two young children, son, Zachory, 7, and daughter, Kaitlyn, 4.

Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.
